Christmas Story - The True Spirit Of Christmas
The true spirit of Christmas has a wonderful way of making everything more beautiful. Christmas is a very special time throughout the Christian world. The twelve day festive holiday begins Christmas Eve until Epiphany in the New Year which falls on the 6th of January. However, from November onwards, the Christmas spirit can be felt and seen everywhere with its wonderful traditions of gift giving, its beautiful Christmas Carols, Nativity scenes, Christmas trees with all their glitter and tinsel and, Christmas Day, when the family will gather to celebrate their much-loved, Christmas traditions and customs with those they love. It's a time of happiness and excitement for all, especially the children who look forward for the arrival of Father Christmas (Santa Claus).
CHRISTMAS STORY-THE BIRTH OF JESUS
The Christmas Story however, has Divine Origins that mark the Christian era with the Birth of Christ. Jesus is the "Light of the World." Through Him, we find the light of love, peace, happiness, hope and, the true spirit of Christmas.
God gave us the gift of His only Son and, salvation so we can inherit The Kingdom of God. Christmas commemorates the Birth of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who was born in a humble stable in Bethlehem, on that first Christmas over 2,000 years ago, surrounded by farm animals and shepherds. In Luke 2:11 the Angel told the shepherds, "For there is Born to you this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord. We go to church at Christmas to honor the Birth of Jesus and to hear the Voice of God.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Deep within the heart, is a recognition that there is something more to this life and beyond, that only God can satisfy. It brings comfort, reassurance, strength, inspiration and a sense of connection to something much greater than we could ever imagine. Faith in God and Jesus manifests a Christian spirit in all we do.
THE SPIRIT OF GIVING
Comfort and Joy is a phrase linked to Christmas. Sadly, there are people who face hardship, sorrow and pain in their earthly lives. So, Christmas is a time to understand the true spirit of what is meant by "its better to give than to receive" because, gifts from the heart are a part of the true spirit of Christmas.
A giving, generous heart, filled with compassion, should be a way of life. We are living out the Vision of God and, we follow in the Footsteps of Jesus by giving generously to those less fortunate in any way we can, without asking for reward. The joy you give to others, is the joy that comes back to you.
GIFT GIVING
It's hard to imagine celebrating Christmas without giving gifts to family, friends and charities. Gift giving also, conveys the true spirit of Christmas as special, symbolic expressions of love, respect, gratitude, friendship and charity.
God gave the wonderful Gift of Jesus Christ to mankind. The Three Wise Men from the east followed the Star of Bethlehem to find the newborn King. They bowed before Him to acknowledge His Deity and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Santa Claus symbolizes this spirit of gift giving and, we identify him with Saint Nicholas with his good deeds and charitable gifts.
A THANKFUL HEART
A grateful heart strengthens the soul. "Be thankful unto Him, and bless His Name, for the Lord is good, His mercy is everlasting and His truth endures to all generations." (Psalm 100:4-5). A thankful heart will reap an abundant harvest in God's blessings. Christmas is a time to be thankful for what we have and to say, "May God bless everyone".
CHRISTMAS CAROLS
Christmas Carols, with their heart-warming spirit of Christmas messages of praise and joy, make everyone feel the Christmas spirit and have a special place in the hearts of young and old. From the religious to the secular, they express the joyful and merry sounds of everything that Christmas stands for. They are sung in church and at home with family and friends, going door-to-door in small groups or, out in the street, to spread the spirit of Christmas and to raise money for charities.
Some of the most beautiful and best-loved religious, Christmas Carols like Silent Night, O Holy Night, Away in a Manger, Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Hark The Herald Angels Sing, The First Noel and Little Drummer Boy are songs of praise for the Birth of Jesus. Secular Christmas Carols like Jingle Bells, White Christmas, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Frosty the Snowman spread their spirit of Christmas cheer with their wondrous warmth.
THE BONDS OF FAMILY
Christmas has certainly always been about the bonds of family as they gather around on Christmas Day to celebrate it's rich Christmas customs and traditions.
On the beautifully decorated Christmas table, there may be traditional roasted meats like turkey, duck or goose, leg of ham and, mouth-watering accompaniments like seasonal vegetables and salads. There may be traditional Christmas pudding, enticing deserts and Christmas biscuits. The festive Christmas table is sure to please, as we celebrate the true spirit of Christmas, on this special day, the Birth of our dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Strange But True Story
My strange but true story starts twenty-five years ago, when I was sixteen. I had just hitched a ride back out to Interstate 90 as the sun was setting. The previous night I had been caught alone in the back country on the northern edge of Yellowstone National Park, in a freak May blizzard. A grizzly bear pawed the ground outside my tent in the middle of the night, scaring me half to death. That, however, is another story.
This strange-but-true-story starts with me standing on the side of the freeway ramp, with my thumb out. Even here in the valley near Livingston there was snow on the lilac flowers, and my tennis shoes were still wet from stumbling (lost) through the mountains earlier in the day. After an hour or two, a car finally pulled over, and this is how I met Violet.
It was tough to determine her age, but from the stories she told, I guessed she was in her fifties. She was on her way home from her brother's trial in Bozeman. When I asked her what he was on trial for, she told me "He killed his girlfriend," and in case I doubted her, she flipped over the newspaper on the seat. There she was on the front page, with the headline, "Sister Says He Should Be Hanged."
"He just cut her up for no good reason," she explained. Not knowing what to say, I said nothing. Although she seemed perfectly comfortable talking about it, she graciously changed the subject.
"Having a hard time getting rides here?" she asked. I told her I had waited a while. "That's because a few years back a man was killed by a hitchhiker right on that highway down to Yellowstone," she explained. "They found the hitchhiker in the woods near the road, roasting the man's heart over a fire."
"I guess that explains why it's hard to get rides," I agreed.
Violet had only had trouble with a hitchhiker once, she told me. "He was even younger than you, and he pulled a knife on me and tried to rob me." When I asked her what she did, she replied casually, "Well, I just pulled out my gun on him and told him he better behave if he wanted a ride." That seemed fair, I agreed.
She told me about the last time she was camping in Yellowstone, back in the fifties, when her husband was still alive. They and others saw a missile come out of the sky and hit a mountain, triggering an earthquake. Army officials came and told everyone in the area that it was a matter of national security, and they couldn't say a word about it. I nodded and asked for a few more details.
Then there was the story about the UFO. An alien spacecraft had hovered over them during another camping trip, picking up their trailer in a "tractor beam" and lifting it off the hitch on the car, into the sky. It was dropped in a field nearby, and the sheriff, who was driving behind them at the moment, saw the whole thing.
Violet let me spend the night at her house, in her brothers room. In the morning, before driving me back out to the freeway, she even offered to let me take any of her brothers clothes or cowboy boots, since, "He won't be needing them anymore." I declined.
Later in the year, safely home in Michigan, I got a letter from Violet, wishing me a Merry Christmas. She had drawn a picture at the top of a dog in a spacesuit, which she labeled "Space Dog." In the meantime, I had discovered that there had been an earthquake in the Yellowstone area when she claimed they saw the missile, and it had been strong enough to form a new lake.
I still was assuming that the killer hitchhiker was at least an exaggeration. It wasn't. Years later I heard all the grizzly details in the news because they were letting the killer go free now that he was sane. Amidst the publicity, the authorities were having a hard time finding a town to place him in.
To this day, I still haven't read or heard anything about an alien spacecraft that picks up camping trailers, but I'm waiting. Who knows? Montana is full of strange but true stories.

The Story of Joshua and Caleb
The story of Joshua and Caleb is one of the most powerful and dramatic stories in the entire Bible. There are major lessons in this story for all Christians to grab hold of!
Most Christians have heard of the story of Moses, but many Christians are not aware of the story involving these two. They are an extension off the story of Moses. They are the climax to the story of Moses, as I will show you below. I'll first give you a brief synopsis of their story and then give you what needs to be learned from their story and how it personally applies to the situation that you are now facing.
Brief Synopsis Of Joshua and Caleb
God sends Moses into the land of Egypt to rescue and pull His people out of slavery from the Egyptians. He parts the Red Sea so they have a way to escape from the Egyptians. He throws 10 whopper plaques at the Pharaoh in order to get him to release His people from their bondage. God the Father performs one of the most powerful supernatural displays of signs and wonders that the world has ever seen to get His people pulled out of Egypt.
Moses tells God's people that He will give them what He calls the "Promised Land." It is a land flowing with milk and honey. He will settle His people down in this land and this is where He will break the Israelites off into 12 different tribes.
However, there is one little catch to this story. Before they are allowed to enter into this Promised Land, they must first pass a test. God allows them to stay in the "wilderness" for 40 years. He gives them all the basics as far as food and water in order to survive in the wilderness for the 40 years.
God purposely tested His people to see if they would "hold fast" to Him while in the wilderness for the 40 years. And time after time, they continued to screw up. At one time, God got so mad at their rebellious attitude, they He literally wanted to kill them. But Moses got into the gap for his people, pleaded his case to God as to why He should not kill His people, and the Bible said God relented and changed His mind - just because Moses stood in the gap and effectively pleaded his case before God.
However, just after a little over 2 years into this 40 year journey is where they finally blew it big time for the last time with God the Father. The Israelites sent in some spies into the Promised Land to check out who the enemy was and to develop battle strategies to defeat the enemies. God was going to allow them to go into the Promised Land, but they first had to defeat and drive out the enemies in order to conquer and possess the land.
When the spies came back, they came back with a "bad report." They said the enemies were "giants" and their kingdoms were too well fortified and they wouldn't be able to defeat them. Now mind you, God had just got done pulling them out of Egypt with one of the greatest displays of His supernatural power the world has ever seen with Him throwing 10 whopper plaques against the Egyptians and then parting the Red Sea to give them safe passage into the wilderness.
When God saw their negative attitudes and their lack of faith and belief in His power, He literally threw up His hands and basically said that's it, you're done. At that point, He told them that all the men 20 years and older would not enter into the Promised Land due to their lack of faith and belief in Him. He said that they would all wander in the desert for the next 40 years until they all literally died out in the desert. God says that their carcasses would fall in this wilderness and that their sons would be shepherds bearing the brunt of their infidelity towards God. The spies that went into to spy out the land did so for 40 days. As a result of this bad report - God pronounces judgment that they should wander in the wilderness for 40 years to match up with the 40 days that they had spied out the land for.
Now this is where Joshua and Caleb come in. God then tells Joshua and Caleb that they and the younger generation under 20 years of age would be the ones to go into the Promised Land because they had "wholeheartedly followed God." They had full faith and belief in God that He could defeat all their enemies once they went into the Promised Land to conquer and possess it.
Joshua was the leader that led them in. Moses himself was not allowed to go in and he died and was buried out in the wilderness. Joshua then took Moses' position as leader of the Israelites. He then goes into the Promised Land with his strong faith in God and then proceeds to literally wipe their enemies off the face of the earth and conquer and possess the land that God had promised their forefathers.
Lessons To be Learned From Joshua and Caleb
1. I believe the "Promised Land" for today's Christian refers to God's call on that person's life. For the Christian that will fully surrender his entire life over to God the Father - I believe God will place a specific call or calls on that person's life. However, it may take many years before God releases that person into what his true calling is for God. Sometimes it takes years of preparation to get ready for that call.
But once that call comes in and you are getting ready to cross over into your "Promised Land," a lot of Christians get cold feet at the last minute and walk out of their call. They start to get too focused on all the negative possibilities that they will encounter if they take the call. Fear sets in and they "bail out of the boat."
This is why the above story is so powerful. The Israelites lost their one and only chance to go into this Promised Land due to one main reason - fear and a lack of true faith and belief in the power of God too see them through. They were too scared of the "giants" they saw in the land that they were supposed to possess and they did not have enough faith in God to conquer and defeat these giants. As a result, they lost out on the biggest blessing of their entire life.
After Joshua fully succeeded in his mission, he makes the comment shortly before he dies, that God had not failed him in any of the promises that He made to him in that He would give him every ounce of land that he would step foot on. He told Joshua that his enemies would be taken out and that he would be given total victory as long as he stayed with God's instructions. Joshua saw his call completely through and when he died, he died a man with his call and mission from God completely fulfilled.
His story is how God wants all of His people to live!! The 2 keys to Joshua's success was his strong faith in God and the fact that he had always "wholeheartedly followed God." I always tell everyone to stay with their leadings from the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that the Holy Spirit will "guide us into all truth and teach us all things." He is our guide and our teacher. If God puts a call on your life, but you don't follow His specific instructions and leadings on how to get there, you will never succeed.
Joshua's story is one of the most dramatic stories in the Bible about someone who "did it right in God." His story is a perfect example for all Christians on how to properly follow God and the call that He can place on your life.
2. Susie, this story really applies to where you are at right now with God. You may be getting ready to have your door opened up to enter into your Promised Land - into God's true call on your life. However, you are well aware of the "giants" and "strongholds" you will be coming against if this door opens up for you.
Susie, remember the above story on Joshua. He saw the same "giants" and "strongholds" you are seeing. He saw all this before going in. God allowed him to see exactly what he was going into before he actually went into it. And God is showing you the same thing.
You have two choices. You can either let fear and panic set in just like the Israelites did and lose your chance to enter into your "Promised Land," or you can have the same strong faith and belief in God that Joshua had - and go in their with a "kick butt attitude" that you will be victorious and that you will accomplish everything that God wants you to accomplish.
I'll leave you with one last thought. Joshua took his strong faith and belief in God, entered the Promised Land and achieved
total victory in God. The Bible says God is "no respecter of persons." What He will do for one, He will do for another.
If God is calling you to go through this door, rest assured that you will have the full power of God operating through you to achieve total victory just like Joshua did!
As a final testament to the this man's story, God saw fit to name one of the books of the Bible after him - "The Book of Joshua." I think that was a very fitting ending to what this man accomplished "in God" while down here on earth. The Bible said Joshua lived to be 110 years old.

Title Your Short Story Right
No matter how fantastic the short story you have written may be, without a catchy title the chances are good that an editor will not read it. The title is the most important part of the story as this is what first captures the reader's attention.
A good title should grab the reader and make them wonder what the story is about. A bad title will probably cause the reader to skip the story altogether. This holds true when submitting your stories for publication. Editors are busy people and will pass on the story, often without reading the first sentence, if your title doesn't capture their interest.
The title of your story will tell the editor a lot about your creativity. If your title is strong, an editor will be more likely to look at your story with a positive attitude.
So how do you come up with a good title? Below is a small list of tips to help you come up with an attention grabbing title.
1. Keep it short, no more than four or five words. Even two or three word titles are generally more than enough. If you can come up with a single word that conveys something about your story, even better.
2. Avoid boring titles. Don't name your story something like 'The Monster' or 'The Sea' as these are dull and boring, and too generalized. Instead, try for something that evokes emotion. 'Under the Bed' would be a good title for a scary story and 'High Tides' works better for a story based on the ocean.
3. Make sure your title fits your genre. Don't name a whodunit with a title that could be confused with a romance story.
4. Make your title easy to remember. This is another reason to keep the title short. Use your creativity to come up with something catchy that relates to the theme, the action, or the characters of the story. A memorable title allows your readers to recommend your story to others.
5. Research the title you come up with. Although titles are not copyrighted, you don't want your story confused with another story of the same name. They can be similar without being exact.
So how do you spark your creativity to come up with the perfect title for your story? The following are a handful of ways to awaken your muse.
a. A short line of dialogue or a memorable sentence from your story can sometimes be the right choice.
b. A common phrase or expression can often be found that sums up the theme of your story. Or use a play on words, where only one element of the phrase is changed.
c. Borrow a line from an established work. Look at Shakespeare, the Bible or other well known book, song or movie.
d. Use one your main characters' names. Think along the lines of 'Tom Sawyer' or Stephen King's 'Christine'.
e. Likewise, your title can be your setting. Think of Brokeback Mountain, Lost in Space, etc...
f. A good title can convey the main idea of your story. 'Misery' or 'Legends of the Fall' are good examples.
g. Use word association to link together elements of the story.
h. Allow the action to determine the name. By adding an 'ing' to the first word, you can come up with a catchy title. Some examples of this could be Chasing Rainbows or Dreaming Life Away.
Often, you can spend hours coming up with a title only to have the editor change it after accepting the story for publication. Sometimes the new title will make little sense to you. While you may think your title is perfect, the editor knows the publication's readers well and may think the alternative is a better choice. And while this may irk your ego, knowing the story will be published is its own reward.
However you come up with the title to your short story, remember it is the first impression the editor will have about your writing abilities. Like the logline to a screenplay or the first paragraph of a novel, the title should represent the story they are about to read. At the end of the day, you want the editor to remember your story and place it in the 'accepted for publication' stack on their desk.

Sunday School Lessons - Learning the Creation Story
The creation story is a central component in Sunday school lessons for any age group. One great way to teach the creation story to the pre-school age group is through a garden unit. A Sunday school garden unit goes through the different elements - air, water, and soil - and explains how God created everything to work together in harmony.
Garden Unit Set Up
Because pre-school kids are so active, it is important to have lessons that incorporate a lot of different activities. For the garden unit, try to teach about the different elements in as many ways as possible - through songs, skits, snacks, and crafts.
Air
Air is a good way to start the garden unit, because it fits with the start of the creation story.
Read the start of the creation story, and talk about how we perceive light and darkness. We might sometimes think it's scary in the dark, but God is everywhere and He always protects us (watch or sing Veggie Tails "God is Bigger than the Boogie Man"). Talk about how smells travel through the air and do an activity where the kids close their eyes and guess what smells you put into the air. We experience the air through wind, which helps us fly a kite or sail a boat. Have the kids draw pictures of "air" and how we use it. End by thanking God for making clean air for us to breathe. Talk about how it's our responsibility to take good care of the air.
Water
After the heavens and light and darkness, God created water.
Talk about the different forms of water (lakes, oceans, rain, bathtub, swimming pool) and have the kids draw pictures of water. Discuss how humans, plants, and animals need water to live. Sing "Deep and Wide." Thank God for our water and talk about not wasting it.
Soil
God also created the earth, which is made from soil, or dirt.
For a messy activity, have the kids close their eyes and feel inside boxes filled with different kids of "dirt," like rich soil, sand, and clay. Talk about how we find different kids of dirt in different places and how they each serve a certain purpose. Spend one week planting bean sprouts in clear cups and talk about how plants grow. Check on the plants from week to week to see their progress. Make "ants on a log" for a snack and talk about all the different kids of life God created. Use celery for the base, and fill the stalks with peanut butter to make the log. Place raisins on top for the ants. Talk about how we need to protect animals and the rest of God's creations. Finish by thanking God for the earth and all He created.

Don't try to take this from me. Now. Feels like I'm waking from the dead And everyone's been waiting on me. Least now, I'll never have to wonder what it's like To sleep a year away. Weren't we indestructible? Thought that we could brave it all. Never thought that what would take me out was hiding down below. Lost the battle Win the war Bringing my sinking ship back to the shore. Starting over. Head back in. There's a time and a place to die but this ain't it. If there's a future, we want it now. Don't try to take this from me. Don't try to take this from me. Now. Wish I could find a crystal ball... For the days I feel completely worthless You know I'd use it all for good, I would not take it for granted Instead I have some memories... for the days I don't feel anything. At the least, they will remind me not to make the same mistakes again. Lost the battle Win the war Bringing my sinking ship back to the shore. Starting over. Head back in. There's a time and a place to die but this ain't it. If there's a future, we want it now. There's a time and a place to die. This ain't it. If there's a future, we want it now.
